divorce seminars since 1985, yet he
wishes he could still ride a bicycle
and write a note. "I can't read labels,"
he says. "Soup cans are all the same
size. I don't know what flavor I've got
until I eat it. The solution is not to
have a lot of choices."
Acknowledging that people mean
well, Flemming still expresses frus-
tration at some people's inability to
adequately comprehend his situation.
"Most sighted people are unaware of
their surroundings," he proclaims.
"I've hung onto a person's arm
and have been run into a pole or a
branch of a tree." Another challenge
is obtaining directions from sighted
persons who navigate by landmarks
that are, to him, invisible.
As an aid, he uses a white cane,
which, he says, "keeps me from
falling into deep holes, protects my
other side when I take someone's
arm, and identifies me as blind."
Flemming recommends receiving
training and advice from the
Michigan Rehabilitation Center for
the Blind, which also teaches home
maintenance skills and beneficial
procedures for functioning in the
kitchen, bedroom, and bath.
With conviction, he says, "Get
the help you need. Get the training.
And use it."
